Meditation is basically quietening of the mind in a relaxed atmosphere. The
brain has electrical charges, which can be measured and recorded by EEG (electro-encephalograms).
It is interesting that in a relaxed and meditating state our brain produces
Alpha waves at eight to thirteen cycles per second. On the other hand when we
are active and working the brain generates Beta waves at fourteen to fifty cycles
per second. During meditation we stimulate the right side of our brain, which
is responsible for inward awareness, passiveness, floating sensation, and serene
and calm feelings. 11
Bahá'u'lláh the founder of the Bahá'í Faith states
" meditate profoundly, that the secret of things unseen may be revealed
unto you, that you may inhale the sweetness of spiritual and imperishable fragrance,
and that you may acknowledge the truth that from time immemorial even unto eternity
the Almighty hath tried, and will continue to try, His servants, so that light
may be distinguished from darkness, truth from falsehood, right from wrong,
guidance from error, happiness from misery, and roses from thorns". 78

Meditation has various techniques including Yoga, Transcendental Meditation
(TM), Zen, relaxation and prayer. Experiment, learn and try them for yourself.
Some Buddhist monks and Indian spiritual leaders meditate up to eight hours
a day. I believe it is good to meditate 20-30 minutes a day in a quiet, relaxed,
warm and undisturbed atmosphere. In fact I recommend you do it twice a day.
Use this time for relaxation, contemplation, rejuvenation, visualisation and
self-improvement. There are classes everywhere. Look up your phone directory.
